Club Mech Elections 2013: Candidates

Brief bios and candidate platforms will be posted on Monday March 18.

President

Amy Leson
Hi Mech,
My name is Amy Leson, and I want to be your 2013-2014 Mech President. I believe that our department is about more than just academics, and I want to increase the number and variety of events and resources available to students to reflect that.
I am in going into my 4th year in the Biomedical option, and I have been involved with the Mech department through a variety of activities including:

  • Engineering Student Teams
  • UBC Orientations
  • Biomedical Events

The three main points I want to advocate for and improve on next year are Event Diversity, Resource Usage and Engagement.

Event Diversity -Club Mech has been heavily focused on holding social and sporting events throughout the year (foosball included, of course). I want to increase the number and variety in these two areas in addition to holding events that pertain to inter-specialty, grad, community, alumni and industry events to appeal to a greater population of Mech.

Resource Usage -I plan to improve the resources available to Mech students through optimizing the use of Club Mech space. Also, I would like to enhance access to year-specific academic and professional development resources through the department, faculty and career services.

Engagement -I want to increase the promotion of Mech events, conferences, competitions, professional and EUS events to ensure students are aware of the opportunities in areas they are interested in. In addition, I plan to have periodical feedback sessions/ surveys for students to express their unmet needs and an informative newsletter to aid in event promotion.

Matt Schlacht
Hey All!

I’m Matt Schlacht and I’m hoping to be your Club Mech President for the 2013-2014 Academic Year! As a student in my final year and having previously held several other positions with Club Mech including treasurer, I bring to the table experience and responsibility.

I would like to emphasize three values that I hold dear and would use to guide Club Mech as I do my own life: Activity, Education and Comradery.

I firmly believe that university should incorporate just as much fun and activity into post-secondary life as it does education; that’s why if elected as President, I will ensure a variety of activities and socials to appeal too and involve everyone!

Ultimately, however, we are here for an education, and whether it’s receiving support to help gain that conceptual understanding, or discussing current and innovative applications, I believe that discussion of topics is always helpful. For that reason I would like to organize regular student discussion sessions open to all.

Finally, and most important of all, Comradery. I truly believe there is nothing more important than people, and as fellow students, we are all in this together. I’ve made a lot of great friends so far here at UBC and I want to meet you too! So whether a new friend or old, if you see me in class, in Club Mech, or even just out and about, stop and say hi; if you have a suggestion for Club Mech or the department, let me know, or even if you just need a friend to talk too, share a success with, open ears to vent too, I’m here.

Feel free to get in touch with me anytime for any reason. You can catch me by phone/text at (604) 356- 7570, or email at m.schlacht@alumni.ubc.ca

Yours Truly,

Matt Schlacht

Social Coordinator

Kevin Langley
Hi everybody, I’m Kevin and I will be running for the position of Social Co-ordinator and Beverage master for Club Mech. I have been at UBC part time and full time for the past 5 years, with next year being my last push to finally graduate. One good thing about stretching a degree out a bit longer is that I will have less class to worry about and more time to plan and co-ordinate interesting events for Club Mech and all mechanical engineers. Some of my hobbies include skiing, riding bicycles, hiking and hanging around in Club Mech.

As the Social Co-ordinator my plan is work with the other Club Mech executives to put on events for engineers. I would like to increase the number of lunchtime barbeques and put on “Friday” events to help de-stress after a tough week of class.

I am currently holding the position of Beverage Master this term, and if re-elected I would continue to serve the people and make sure that nobody goes thirsty, and there is always tasty varieties stocked in your favourite vending machine. The main goal for next year is to try and find a new coin receiving mechanism that will accept 2012 and newer coins, in addition to giving change.

Sports Rep

Katherine Babcock
Another Mech Futsal Tournament and continue to reimburse 50% of any UBC Rec fees you pay for leagues and events. Also open to suggestions for new sports events you would like to see happen next year!

Pop and Candy
