Engineers adhere to a code of ethics that guides them through both personal and professional decisions throughout their lives. This code is integrated into an engineer’s professional journey, from the Iron Ring Ceremony to the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGBC) Code of Ethics.

However, ethics are not only important to professional engineers, but also play a large role in the lives of engineering students. Last year, as part of our inclusivity initiative, the UBC Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) started to address the lack of early education surrounding this important aspect of our profession. With the support of the Faculty of Applied Science, the EUS has been working to develop the Iron Pin Ceremony. The EUS intends this ceremony to become a symbol of each student’s entrance into the profession being a UBC Engineer. This will become an annual tradition, to welcome all incoming students into the UBC Engineering community with a pin marked by their entrance yearThe UBC Engineering Code of Ethics is adapted from the APEGBC Code of Ethics, to be relevant and relatable to students and their time as a UBC Engineer. For the EUS, each line of the Code relates back to their executive and volunteer structure and their roles as leaders in this society.

All UBC Vancouver Campus Engineering Students, Staff and Faculty are invited to the UBC Engineering Iron Pin Ceremony. Although the Iron Pin Ceremony will be targeted at students in their first term at UBC Engineering, for the inaugural year we would like to start this tradition by inviting all members of the UBC Engineering Community to participate. Together we shape the UBC Engineering community culture and by adopting this Code of Ethics it will provide a visible statement to the incoming students of the integrity of our profession.
